What is the NEBOSH General Certificate?

NEBOSH stands for the ‘National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health’. The NEBOSH General Certificate is a more detailed examination, covering a wide range of topics in some depth over a ten day period.

The course is completed by undertaking an inspection of a workplace and achieving a passing grade in two written examination papers.

Who is this course suitable for?

Ideal for the designated person in your company who is responsible for health and safety, it is widely respected by employers and meets the requirements of Technician Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH) and Associate Membership of IIRSM (AIIRSM).

What is the structure of the course?

 The NEBOSH General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK. Areas that the course covers includes:

  • Organising for safety
  • Health and Safety culture
  • Risk Assessments
  • Accident Investigation
  • Management Systems
  • Vehicle movement
  • Manual Handling
  • Work Equipment
  • Electrical Hazards
  • Fire Hazards
  • Chemical Hazards
  • Construction Activities

It is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:

  • NGC1: Management of Health and Safety
  • NGC2: Controlling Workplace Hazards
  • NGC3: Health and Safety Practical Application – a practical assessment which consists of carrying out a safety inspection and preparing a brief management report.

Examinations for both NGC1 and NGC2 are two hour written exams completed on the same day.

There are a number of ways you can complete this qualification:
