Both NEBOSH and IOSH courses are highly regarded within the health and safety field, but how do I know which one is right for me or my employees?

What is NEBOSH?

NEBOSH stands for the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health. They are an independent examination board that provide a wide range of qualifications designed to train people in health, safety and environmental management.

The courses that NEBOSH offer include:

  • NEBOSH Award – a basic introduction to health and safety. Assessed by a multiple choice examination and a practical project completed at the student’s workplace.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health – a highly regarded health and safety qualification ideal for individuals who want to launch into a health and safety career. Consists of two taught units and a practical assessment.
  • NEBOSH Diploma – a national postgraduate diploma ideal for anyone planning to become a full qualified health and safety practitioner. Consists of three taught units and a written assignment.

As well as the General Certificate, NEBOSH offer a range of specific certificates including the Construction Certificate, Fire Certificate and Environmental Certificate.

What is IOSH?

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is the world’s largest health and safety membership body. As well as offering health and safety courses, IOSH is the chartered body for health and safety professionals.

The courses that IOSH offer are:

  • IOSH Working Safely – a basic introduction course, covering general information on roles and responsibilities.
  • IOSH Managing Safely – an intermediate course for supervisors and managers to provide a more in-depth understanding of health and safety issues they are likely to be responsible for.
  • IOSH Safety for Executives and Directors – aimed to senior personnel to provide a clear understanding of their key legal liabilities.

The main difference between NEBOSH and IOSH courses is in regards to who they are aimed at.

NEBOSH courses are aimed at designated health and safety persons within an organisation, or those seeking a career within health and safety management.

IOSH courses are aimed at employees and managers who don’t have specific health and safety responsibilities or work in a low risk environment.

Safetyboss offers NEBOSH and IOSH courses both in-house and from our training centre in Woodbridge, Suffolk. Take a look at our website here to view more information on the courses we offer.
