Is Health and Safety for you? - Considering a career change

Health and Safety Career

We’ve all been in that situation at some time or another. Stuck. Our ‘get up and go’ has ‘got up and gone’. We’re treading water. We want to do something but don’t know what to do.

Einstein (I didn’t know him personally but he seems a bright chap) once said:

“Once you stop learning, you start dying”

I got into health and safety totally by accident. My company realised they needed someone to ‘do’ health and safety and I happened to be on annual leave, so I was elected in my absence. I started with the NEBOSH General Certificate and haven’t looked back. I’ve worked in construction, film production and the NHS.

It stood me in good stead when, many years later at the age of 49, I realised my early retirement to Spain with the man of my dreams had turned into a nightmare and I returned to England with all my worldly goods packed into a Hyundai Amica.

Had I been just a general manager, getting work when pushing 50 would have been nigh impossible, but not within the field of health and safety. I waved my NEBOSH Diploma and got a job within three months.

But I don’t know if I’d like health and safety, I hear you say. Well, then, dip your toe into the water with some of our short online courses; these include:

  • Legionella
  • Risk Assessment
  • Dichloromethane (DCM)
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • CDM Regulations

Ok, I think I might like it. But I’ve not sat an exam for donkeys’ years.

Your luck is in! Not only have NEBOSH updated their General Certificate Course but they have also got rid of the need to sit in an exam!

  • Learn online, at your own pace
  • 1:1 support – no asking questions in front of others
  • Open book assessment - you have 24 hours to complete this
  • Assessment is based on real-life work situations
  • Write a risk assessment of your own (or someone else’s) workplace

So, what can a NEBOSH Certificate get me?

  • A job
  • A promotion
  • A transferable qualification

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my career in health and safety -  and so might you!
